Elix Developed an AI Solution for Monitoring Crowd Density and Crowd Counting to Prevent the Spread of COVID-19

Elix, Inc. This is done by analyzing images in real-time and detecting the crowd size and relative positions of the people recorded by the camera. This solution has been designed as a countermeasure for coronavirus (hereinafter “COVID-19 ”) infections. Since Thursday June 4, 2020, the company has started providing this solution for experimental use to corporates and municipalities that are requesting its implementation.

Computer vision has been the primary focus since the company’s foundation, which has seen them develop many AI models for autonomous driving / ADAS, anomaly detection / visual inspection and real-time processing on edge devices.

Currently, COVID-19 is threatening the lives of people worldwide.  One of the best preventive measures against the spread of COVID-19 is social distancing, such as avoiding closed spaces, crowded places and close-contact with others.

To help fill the need for social distancing measures, this solution enables clients to detect crowds and measure crowd density in real-time, by detecting the crowd size and relative positions of the people recorded by the camera images. Additional features such as detecting the presence of masks can also be included at the request of the clients.

The main use of this solution is expected to be in places with high crowd density, such as commercial facilities including shopping malls, event venues, public facilities, as well as workspaces such as office buildings and factories.

Elix will contribute to the fight against the spread of COVID-19, utilizing its experience  developing deep learning models that has been cultivated over the years.

It is believed to take some time, probably years until an effective vaccine for COVID-19 will be developed and will become accessible to people around the world. In the meantime, social distancing is probably the most effective way to suppress the number of infections. On the other hand, if the situations such as  lockdowns or a state emergency declaration continue, the economic losses will become enormous. In order to prevent further economic losses, it is important to continue our economic activities while maintaining social distancing, which is why we developed this product and we hope it will make a contribution to overcome this situation.
